The
Flight of the…. WOMMOMBOMBLASTER!
Chapter
1
Many
stories begin with the words “A long, long time ago in a distant
land, there lived a young unhappy prince who was in debt to the local
IRS and the big bad nasty sheriff of Washington DC was coming for a
friendly visit” … ok, scratch that it never happened.
Our
story begins with “coming soon to a Family near you”. In the
world of tomorrow in a place where make believe is possible in a
faraway land 10 miles north of Portland Oregon a strange event was
about to take place that would change the lives of a certain
Vancouver family forever!
The
Night was cool and clear in southern Washington; a full moon lit the
surrounding countryside for miles. Normally there was a breeze but
tonight it was still, sort of like the calm before a storm.
On
top of a densely forested hill sat an old white two story farm house
with a wraparound covered porch. In this farmhouse a family of 5 was
sleeping soundly…
Ok
alright, yes somebody was snoring… I mean 5 people with nobody
snoring would be too hard to believe. After all the tooth fairy needs
a distraction, that’s why snoring was invented, right? Ok, no more
interruption’s please! Now let me get on with my story, where was
I? Ah yes…
There
was a Dad and a Mom in the large master bedroom then just down the
hall on the second floor were 3 children; two sisters, Alexis the big
sister age 11, her younger sister Gracey age 3 who shared a room.
Then there was a medium sized brother named Kolby who had the large
corner office all to himself. It was really a bedroom but Kolby liked
to call it His corner office! Since he was the man of the house when
Dad was at work plus he was the eldest boy, actually he was the only
boy. Oh Yes, Kolby was 8 and a half years old!
As
I said before, all were sleeping soundly unaware of the strange
mysterious event that was about to occur in the field at the north
end of their home. It was a normal looking field by field standard,
with green grass, a cow named daisy chewing the cud in the far left
corner, some goats, 3 geese; John, Paul & Ringo and a donkey
named Harold.
It
was like their own private island in a sea of tall green trees. There
was a long winding driveway from the main road to the house lined by
tall stately looking Douglas firs who appeared to be standing guard.
Now
where was I? Ah, yes the family were all fast asleep on Douglas
Island, hey that’s a good name for their home don’t you think, ok
the votes are in Douglas island it is.
WWWWWrrrrrrrrrrrrrr,WWWWWWWrrrrrrrrrrrrrr,mmmmmmmmmmmmm,WWWWWWWWWrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Kolby was woken up by a strange whirring sound, he thought at first
he was dreaming, then he thought it was just the Toilet water tank
filling up after someone had flushed as it made a whirring sound and
rattled the water pipes. But the strange sound got louder, he sat up
in bed, listened, it was coming from outside.
Whatever it was it had a very bright light as it lit up the whole bedroom… mmmmmm… the toilet has never done this before he thought. Oddly enough he was not afraid, so he climbed out of bed, went to the bedroom window, opened the blinds and looked out. It was too bright to see anything so he went to his toy box found his red white and blue plastic flight helmet that his uncle Roger had given him last Christmas with the really cool pull down sun visor. Helmet on, he returned to the window with visor down ready for action!

Helmet on, he returned to the window with visor down ready for action!
The
visor really helped he was able to see the front yard , the large
Pecan tree , their car parked in the driveway close to the front door
but he could not see the source of the light he then looked to the
left towards the field at the north end where the light was
brightest. He thought he saw something or someone moving in the
middle of the field. He blinked and then looked again no movement
this time. The sound was starting to fade away; it was now a gentle
hum. The light too was starting to dim, all of a sudden it was gone.
All that was left was the light of the moon; it was as if nothing had
happened. Kolby lifted his visor waiting for his eyes to adjust to
the moonlight; he saw bright spots for a while until his eyes could
once again focus. Wait a minute he thought why did ‘Dave’ not
bark it was then that he felt that familiar soft friendly nose
touching his left hand.
“Dave”
he said smiling
“Did
you not hear or see what was happening?”
Dave
looked at him with that confused inquisitive look that dogs have ,
you know head cocked to one side and looking at you as if to say “who
me?”
Dave
only seemed interested in wagging his tail, snuggling up to Colby and
looking at the bed as if to say
“Come
on I’m tired let’s turn in”
Kolby
looked out the window again at the North field it appeared totally
normal, no sign of any strange machine or whatever it was.
“Did
I dream this” he asked Dave
“I
mean you don’t miss a thing boy, you can smell the post man
hundreds of yards away and you bark at the sound of his truck”
All
of a sudden Kolby felt very tired, he let out a big yawn, Dave looked
at him as if to say now you get the picture Bed, Bed I want Bed .So
Kolby decided he had had enough excitement for one night and guessed
it must have been Mr. Jones the tree farmer next door working late he
had extra bright lights on his tractor so that would explain the
light and the engine the loud whirring noise. With that last thought
he lay down with Dave snuggled against him and fell fast asleep.
Within minutes he was snoring, Dave looked at him as if to say “for
crying out loud not again” and placed his front paws over his Ears.
